Chelsey Lucas, the volleyball coach at Grambling State University, was fired on Tuesday, according to the department of athletics. Rick Gallot, the president of GSU, and Dr. Trayvean Scott, the vice president for intercollegiate athletics, made the news.

The choice was taken after the volleyball program's internal inquiry determined that Lucas had abruptly cut the whole team and revoked their scholarships, according to reports.

The main concern, according to Scott, is the student-athletes' progress and ability to enroll at Grambling State University. "All volleyball student-athletes who obtained scholarships for the 2022–2023 academic year will keep their scholarships and remain on the team. Walk-ons will also continue to hold their roster position while we go forward with this transition and begin a national search for the next coach.

Up to the investigation's end, no more remarks will be made.

Before being hired by Grambling on February 14 to replace Demetria Keys-Johnson, Lucas played three seasons at Arkansas-Pine Bluff before winning the SWAC defensive player of the year award in 2006.

Gallot added, "That applies to athletics as much as it does to academics. It is the obligation of this school to ensure that student-athletes are offered chances in a way compliant with all regulatory agencies."

This week will mark the start of a nationwide search for a new volleyball coach.
